Dr. Lloyd Humphreys on Building the Future of Healthcare Apps

Episode 21

Welcome back to Trail Blazers. In today’s episode, we explore the intersection of psychiatry, digital health, and entrepreneurship. We will discuss the latest innovations transforming mental health care and how entrepreneurs are reshaping the landscape with groundbreaking digital solutions.

Our guest today is the inspiring guest, Dr Lloyd Humphreys, Managing Director at Cogniss and NHS Innovation Accelerator alumnus — a pioneer in cognitive therapy research, a PTSD specialist, and the founder of one of the country's first refugee and asylum seeker services in Manchester. After experiencing both the rewards and frustrations of traditional practice, Lloyd began to move into the world of digital therapeutics, where Cogniss was born, as a no-code platform for creating healthcare apps with zero technical knowledge.

We’ll talk to Lloyd about his journey from delivering online training, cutting out the middleman, to creating revolutionary platforms like Cogniss. Cogniss is changing the way healthcare apps are designed and built, putting the power in the hands of medical professionals who lack the knowledge of code, but have the clinical skills to really help patients.

Lloyd is driven by a core mission: to help as many people as possible through scalable and impactful solutions. We’ll discuss the huge scale of the challenges in digital health, such as the often £340,000 it costs to get an app into the app store, the tech hurdles, compliance, and regulation issues, and the time-consuming process - only 86% of apps are built within two years.

But it’s not all challenges - there are incredible opportunities too. With no-code platforms, even clinicians with brilliant ideas but no technical skills can now build apps in days and weeks instead of months and years. We’ll hear about the creation of over 77 apps, including "Raising Healthy Minds," which supports parents with toddlers, and the rapid development process, like building an app in just 12 hours for a WHO event.

We’ll also discuss how digital health technology is reaching unserved populations, offering hyper-personalised approaches, and empowering communities, including those with rare diseases.

Lloyd will share insights on building a community marketplace ecosystem, the importance of partnering with designers, video creators, accelerators, and innovators, and how to navigate the complex landscape of global regulations.

Join us as we uncover the overarching vision of creating a superapp - a Netflix for digital health - that offers a library of curated, personalised experiences. We’ll discuss bridging the trust gap in health systems, fostering the right conditions for innovation, and the incredible potential of wearables and devices.

Prepare to be inspired by the possibilities of preventative health measures and real-life effectiveness tracking. Whether you're a clinician, an entrepreneur, or someone passionate about digital health, this episode will provide valuable insights and ignite your imagination.

Stay tuned as we embark on this journey to the future of digital health, where innovation meets impact, and dreams turn into reality.
