Jon Turner on Healing Through Nature

Episode 29

Welcome to our latest episode of Trail Blazers, where each conversation challenges us to explore life’s edges. In today’s episode, Johnny speaks with Jon Turner, a former U.S. soldier who found healing in nature and now dedicates himself to helping other veterans navigate their reintegration into society. Jon shares his own journey, the role of the natural world in his recovery, and how he now guides others to find peace outside the noise of everyday life.

Jon’s story begins with a deep connection to the military, stemming from a family legacy of service. Growing up, he was aware that nearly every generation before him had served in wars going back to the American Revolution. Enlisting in the military himself felt like a natural progression, and he spent several years in Iraq and Haiti before being medically retired due to combat injuries. In his early 20s and carrying physical and emotional wounds, Jon returned home to face the daunting task of finding a new purpose and readjusting to civilian life.

Reconnecting with nature became Jon’s lifeline. Gardening, mountain biking, climbing, and even teaching survival skills provided him with grounding and a therapeutic outlet. Spending time outdoors reminded him of simpler moments from his childhood and helped him rediscover a sense of peace.

“The more we lean into our weaknesses, the stronger we become over time,” he reflects, explaining that vulnerability is not a weakness but a stepping stone to resilience.

Through his journey, Jon recognised how common it is for veterans to struggle with reintegration, especially when their return home involves such a drastic shift from the regimented, intense environment of combat. He acknowledges that while military culture is steeped in pride and stoicism, it sometimes prevents veterans from acknowledging their challenges. For Jon, the key lies in embracing these vulnerabilities rather than hiding from them.

Now, Jon works with veterans, using the natural world to foster healing. In his survival courses, participants are encouraged to engage with nature, which often brings out a gentler, more introspective side. Jon believes that nature holds a unique power to calm the mind and reduce anxiety, allowing veterans to tap into their own resilience. His work helps create a supportive community that encourages veterans to seek help, lean on each other, and recognise the value of shared experiences.

Jon’s journey is a testament to the healing power of nature and the strength that comes from embracing vulnerability. We hope you enjoy this conversation on resilience, nature, and the journey back to oneself.
